The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) has standardized the CMDB Federation (CMDBf) specification, a version of which was previously published here on cmdbf.org. Current information about CMDBf is available at http://www.dmtf.org/standards/cmdbf/

CMDBf was originally developed by a consortium of BMC Software, CA, Fujitsu, HP, IBM and Microsoft, and published on cmdbf.org. The DMTF version refines the initial published version and implements the original vision for CMDBf documented on cmdbf.org:

"CMDB Federation describes the architecture and interactions for federating data repositories together to behave as a data store that satisfies the role of a Configuration Management Database (CMDB). The federation provides an aggregate view of a resource even though the data and underlying repositories are heterogeneous. A query interface is defined for external clients to access these data."
